Hello everyone, my son is 1 year old. He had a respiratory infection which then turned into a wet cough + runny nose that persists to this day, and he also cut a tooth. The pediatrician prescribed a bunch of things (I didn't buy all of it). We are using a humidifier, Aquamaris, Viferon suppositories, Ibuprofen, Nazivin for congestion, and I give him chamomile and he has been in a salt bath, but the cough won't go away. How can I help get rid of the mucus? Can I give him Mucaltin? It's really hard for him at night with the cough.

Good day! A cough in a little one can indeed be very severe and unpleasant. Mukaltin is an excellent remedy for moisturizing and thinning mucus. However, before giving it to your child, it is better to consult a pediatrician to make sure it is safe for your child and not contraindicated in this situation. You can also try doing regular moist inhalations using a nebulizer or simply over a boiling pot of water. Don't forget about regularly airing out the room and maintaining optimal air humidity. I hope your little one feels better soon!

Expectorants should not be given to children under 3 years old. They do not know how to expel mucus. Perform drainage massage and consult a doctor if the cough does not subside.

Mucolytics are not given to young children at all, especially Mukaltin, which is allowed from 12 years old or strictly under a doctor's supervision to monitor the lungs dynamically, which is generally simple. Coughs vary; if it's a superficial cough, then drink plenty and clean the nose well. Otherwise, I used hormones with a doctor when the cough was getting deeper. A cough generally can last up to a month; if it bothers you only at night, check the cleanliness of the nose, as mucus often drips down the throat causing the cough. I also recommend tilting the angle of the backrest by placing a pillow under the mattress (like a cradle in the maternity ward) so that it lies evenly, i.e., not too high. If the temperature lasts more than 5 days, see a good doctor for tests.

Coughs in such little ones must definitely be treated properly! No self-medication! It is not permissible to thin the mucus with mucolytics. The amount of mucus will increase, and due to the weak respiratory system, the child will not be able to cough it up, and trouble could be close at hand. Coughs in older children also need treatment, but there you can manage with folk medicine. But at one year old, only under a doctor's supervision.
