Good afternoon, I'm 15 weeks and 2 days along. I've had my urine tested three times and they keep finding protein. The doctors are scaring me, saying it's bad, and they've referred me for a consultation at the maternity hospital. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it really something to be afraid of? I have no swelling and nothing else is bothering me.

Good afternoon! I understand your concern — it's upsetting when something unusual shows up in tests. Briefly to the point: - A small amount of protein in the urine is often temporary and does not necessarily mean a serious problem: it can be caused by concentrated urine, heavy physical exertion, heat, or a urinary tract infection. The dipstick test can also give false-positive results. - Serious conditions (for example, preeclampsia) more often develop after the 20th week; before 20 weeks it's rare, but doctors refer patients for consultation to rule out other causes and for safety. - What is usually done if protein is found again: a repeat clean morning (or carefully collected midstream) urine test, a urine culture (to exclude infection), and/or quantitative measurement (protein/creatinine ratio or 24-hour collection). Blood pressure is also monitored and blood tests are done if needed. What you can do now: - Ask your doctor which exact values were elevated and request repeat labs (morning sample, culture). - Monitor your blood pressure at home if possible. - Seek immediate care if you develop swelling, severe headaches, vision changes, abdominal pain, or a general worsening of how you feel. Don't panic — a referral to the maternity ward is usually precautionary. If you want, write what the exact results were (how much protein on the dipstick or grams in the 24-hour urine) and whether you had fever, pain when urinating, or high blood pressure — I'll suggest what to expect next.
